BANTAM
BULLDOGS ARE BACK
The
AVMHA Bantam A Bulldogs opened their season with two exhibition wins at
Weyerhauser last weekend. On Saturday they faced off against
Campbell River Tyees and came away with a 6-2 victory. The Bulldogs
finished on top of Oceanside 6-2 in Sunday’s game. The whole team
was contributed to the weekend results. The coaches will build on
these first games as they try to forge a really strong team from a group
of players who are still getting used to each other.
The
Bantam Bulldogs will be playing their first placement round games away
next weekend. They play Cowichan at 1:30 PM at Fuller Lake Arena on
Saturday September 26 and Nanaimo at Nanaimo Ice Centre at 3:30 on
September 27.

BANTAM
BULLDOGS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS
The
whole Victoria team gets together to stop Jas Sidhu (19) and another
Bulldog in front of their goal
The
Bantam A Bulldogs posted a solid victory over Victoria Racquet Club
Kings on Saturday at the Multiplex. The usually strong
Victoria team was no match for the locals, who out-skated, out-shot
and out-hit the visitors throughout the game.
The
Bulldogs opened scoring on a power play at 14:40 of the first period
when Sam Visona put Beau Wilson’s pass in stick side. Tyler
Wilhelm’s point shot at 7:03 made it 2-0 before Victoria came back
with two goals to end the period at 2-2. For a while it looked
as if the momentum would shift to Victoria, but two quick goals put
Alberni back in control. Five minutes into the second period,
Ryan Buse scored with a slap shot from the right point.
Seconds later Wilhelm took a feed from Marino Somerville and slapped
in another one from the left hatch marks. Two minutes later
Wilson flipped one upstairs over the sprawling goalie’s glove to
make it 5-2 at the ice clean.
When
play resumed Wilhelm made a power play rush from deep in Bulldogs’
territory and fed Austin Smith behind the defence to find an opening
on the stick side. Victoria got one back. As the second
period wound down, Chase Gaudreault pushed the puck back from a
scrum in front of the Victoria net. Buse jumped on the puck
and slammed it past the screened goalie. To close out the
period Visona set up Somerville for a breakaway to make the score
8-3. On the opening play of the third period the Bulldogs
struck again. Wilhelm put the puck deep for Somerville who
passed across the crease where Wilson slid it in on the open side.
With 14 minutes to go Smith skated deep down the right side and sent
a perfectly timed pass cross ice to Logan Savard who one timed it
behind the goalie. Final score 10-3.
The
win should give the Bantams some confidence as they travel to the
mainland on Thanksgiving weekend for the Ridge Meadows Fall
Icebreaker Tournament.

BANTAM SPLIT
In
weekend action at home the Bantam A Bulldogs outscored their opposition
by 13 to 3, coming away with a lopsided victory over Oceanside
and then falling one goal short in a 3-2 loss to Powell River.

On
Friday, Oceanside woke the Alberni team up by scoring in the first
minute of play. The Bulldogs responded by controlling play and
shutting out the visitors for the rest of the game. At the top of
the scoring were Corey Beecroft (2G, 3A), Connor Gagnon (2G, 2A) and
Logan Savard (2G, 2A). The final score was 11-1.
It
was different story on Saturday as the Bulldogs speedy forwards had
trouble finding a hole in the Powell River defence. Powell River
scored at 15:20 of the first period and again at 17:42 of the second.
Liam McLeod got Alberni Valley on the board at 15:51 of the second
assisted by Austin Smith and Spencer Pierce. Powell River went up
by 2 early in the third period. Then at 12:31 the Bulldogs power
play got them close. Beecroft and Beau Wilson got the puck on goal
and Pierce was able to pull a rebound back from the goalie and put it in
the open side of the net. However, in spite of some good chances
for Alberni, that was the last goal of the game.

BANTAM BULLDOGS
BATTLE BEST
The Bantam A
Bulldogs, sponsored by Dave Koszegi (ReMax Realty) and Sure Span
Construction Ltd., are playing in Division 1 of the Island League this
year. Reaching this level is in itself an achievement, but as a team
from a small town, the Bulldogs have taken on a real challenge to
compete against rep teams from the larger cities.
After lopsided
losses to
Nanaimo in the pre-season, there was
some apprehension leading up to the first regular game on Saturday at
Nanaimo Ice Centre. But you couldn’t tell from the way the Bulldogs
played. The whole team was flying from the first whistle. Nanaimo
scored first, but Alberni evened it up before the end of the first
period. Spencer Pierce cleared to Nathan Read, who made a long pass
down the boards to Corey Beecroft. Beecroft scored with a hard shot
from the top of the right circle.
The Bulldogs
continued to skate with
Nanaimo through a scoreless second
period. They allowed few good opportunities for the opposition and
played most of the time in the offensive zone. In the third period
Pierce scored to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. For a while an upset
looked possible, but Nanaimo capitalized on two power plays to finish
ahead 3-2. With this game the Bulldogs team proved that they are
competitive with any other team in the league.
The Bantam
Bulldogs are at home at the Multiplex next weekend, playing Juan de
Fuca Grizzlies at
1:00 PM on November 28. They have
an exhibition game with Peninsula Eagles at 2:30 PM on November 29.

BANTAM A BULLDOGS BEAT
FISH, GAME AND BIRDS
The Bantam A
Bulldogs went 3 for 3 last weekend. On Friday November 27 they
travelled to
Campbell River for an evening
game against the Tyees. Alberni got the first goal with a man
advantage (Corey Beecroft from Ellis Martin) at 13:40 of the first
period, but the Tyees took it back on the buzzer It was late in
the second frame before the Bulldog shooters started to find their
mark. Austin Smith passed to Sam Visona for a nice power play
goal late in the period, quickly followed by another from Spencer
Pierce with help from Beau Wilson and Ryan Buse. Smith scored
early in the third, but Campbell River narrowed the gap moments
later and kept on coming. It took back to back goals by Logan
Savard and Buse late in the game to seal the 6-2 win.
November 28th
at the Alberni Valley Multiplex was an important league game
against Juan de Fuca
Grizzlies. Juan de Fuca scored first. With
7:14
left in the first, Savard drove to the net with Pierce on a power
play. Pierce knocked in the tying goal. Juan de Fuca came back
hard, but as the period closed, Connor Gagnon got behind the JDF
defence and snapped the puck in glove side. The rest of the game
was an end to end battle of defence and goaltenders. The Bulldogs
team defence gave up few opportunities, and Bryce Dirocco was
solid in goal to take the 2-1 win. Coach Kevin Somerville said,
“The team was good today, the way they need to play in this
division.”
Sunday’s
exhibition game with Peninsula Eagles was a different kind of game
with numerous turnovers. The first period finished up 2-1 on
goals by Smith and Wilson. Peninsula evened it up with two
Alberni players in the box early in the second. Then Beecroft put
one in off the crossbar and Wilson and Sam Visona combined in a
nice two on one for two more power play goals. Peninsula got one
back before Pierce skated in from the point and picked the top
right corner right on the buzzer. The Eagles kept coming and made
it 5-4 as the third period began. At
13:34 Liam
MacLeod carried the puck deep on a 3 on 1 rush and passed back
across the crease for Savard to finish on the open side. With
five minutes left Smith and Visona in close bounced shots off the
goalie’s pads before Beecroft grabbed the second rebound and
finished it off for a 7-4 final.
The Bantam
reps acknowledge their sponsors Sure Span Construction and Dave
Koszegi of ReMax. They next play away against Cowichan at
Fuller
Lake, December 5 at 1:30 and at home to Nanaimo at 2:30 PM
December 6 at Weyerhauser.

The Bantam A
Bulldogs split their games on the Dec 5-6 weekend,
outplaying Cowichan at Fuller Lake in a 4-1 game, but unable to find a
winning combination at home against Nanaimo. They are tied for 3rd
place in the Island League Division 1 standings.
In Fuller Lake the
Bulldogs drew first blood on a power play when Austin Smith ripped a
hard shot in from the left circle. Logan Savard assisted. Cowichan
evened it up as the first period ended. The second period was an end
to end battle. With only 2:27 left on the clock Corey Beecroft and
Savard worked the puck across the blue line. Savard went hard to the
net and drove in the game winning goal on the blocker side. At 11:31
of the third period Beau Wilson and Liam MacLeod cycled the puck to
big Tyler Wilhelm in the slot to get the insurance goal. The Bulldogs
protected their lead for the rest of game, keeping Cowichan in the
other end. With a minute left Beecroft worked the puck in for MacLeod
to finish it off with a 4-1 win.
Casey Davidson made
some great saves to maintain the Alberni lead, but the whole team
played intense hard hockey for three periods to take this one. They
next play an exhibition game against Cowichan on December 12 followed
by a game in Comox on Dec 13.
The Bantam reps
have picked up another sponsor. Tseshaht Market joins Dave Koszegi
and Sure Span Construction as sponsors of the Bantam A team.

BANTAM BULLDOGS GET
READY FOR PLAYOFFS
The Bantam A Bulldogs played their
last games of the regular season on January 9th and 10th.
On Saturday they made the trek to meet the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies at
Bear Mountain. They did well to start, taking a 2-1 lead early in the
second period on goals by Sam Visona and Tyler Ibsen. Visona also
assisted on the second goal. After that, there was lots of individual
effort, but the Alberni passing game was missing. The Grizzlies took
a comfortable lead with four unanswered goals. The Bulldogs got some
sustained pressure going late in the 3rd period. That led
to a goal from Austyn Smith. Spencer Pierce assisted. The final goal
was an empty netter to give Juan de Fuca a 6-3 win. One bright spot
for Alberni was a penalty kill that allowed no goals against.
On Sunday at home the Bantams
showed up to play as a team against Cowichan Valley, skating and
hitting hard from the opening puck drop. They scored first with a man
advantage. Tic tac toe passing went from defencemen Nathan Read and
Dawson Marlatt for Marino Somerville to finish in close. The game
went back and forth and Cowichan went ahead by a goal in the second
period. Ibsen and Beau Wilson combined for Smith to even it up late
in the second period. Spencer Pierce scored the next goal, banging in
a rebound from Wilson and Smith early in the third period. Both teams
had chances after that and Casey Davidson made some great saves to
keep the lead. Then Cowichan got a break and tied it up at 3-3 with
less than a minute left. The specialty teams did well in this game,
scoring two power play goals and allowing no goals against during the
penalty kill. There was good skating and passing throughout.
|
With this kind of
energy and team work the Bantams will be in good shape for the
playoffs. In the meantime they are off to the Kamloops T2 Tourney
January 15-17. Thanks to sponsors Dave Koszegi of ReMax and Surespan
Construction Ltd. for the support that makes this possible.

AV Bantam A Bulldogs at
Kamloops Tourney
The Alberni Valley
Bantam A Bulldogs topped their pool in the Bantam Division of the
Kamloops AA Tournament January 15-17, only to be edged out by a strong
Whitehorse team in the semi-final. The teams in the tournament were
closely competitive with each other, with numerous ties in the
standings.
The Bulldogs opened
with a 4-4 tie against Quesnel Thunder in a late game Friday. Dawson
Marlatt was chosen MVP. On Saturday morning they beat Vernon Vipers
8-3. Beau Wilson was MVP. This was followed by another tie against
Wenatchee Wild which saw the Bulldogs down 3-1 with two minutes left.
At that point Coach Kevin Somerville pulled the goalie in favour of an
extra attacker. The Alberni offence blasted the goalie with shots,
most from the blue line. The lead was quickly narrowed to a single
goal. Then with seconds left on the clock, Ryan Buse made yet another
point shot that got through and tied the game at 3-3. Buse was chosen
as game MVP.
Even the semi-final
was closer than the score would suggest. The game went end to end
throughout and the Bulldogs had many more shots on goal than
Whitehorse. A couple went off the posts. Unfortunately only two got
past the Whitehorse goal tender, and one of those was disallowed as a
result of a quick whistle. In the other semi-final, host Kamloops
edged out Quesnel in a shoot out. Kamloops went on to win the final
against Whitehorse and the tournament.
The Bantam Bulldogs showed good team play in
this tournament and the ability to move the puck around and generate
offence from the blue line as well as up front. The penalty kill
continues to be strong. This will help in the upcoming North Island
finals which will include a game against Campbell River in Port
Alberni on January 30th and an away game with Powell River
on February 6th.
The support of sponsors Dave Koszegi of
ReMax and Sure Span Construction Ltd. helps make possible the travel
for events such as the
Kamloops tournament.

BANTAM BULLDOGS BEAT TYEES
The Bantam A
Bulldogs beat Campbell River 4-2 at Weyerhauser arena in VIHL North
Island Play-off action Saturday. The Bulldogs survived a lengthy 5 on
3 situation before scoring late in the first period. Tyler Wilhelm
and Chase Gaudreault set up Beau Wilson who put a back hand shot on
the top shelf. At 14:40 of the second period Nathan Read powered down
the left side around the defence and then combined with Liam MacLeod
for the second goal. With a two goal lead the Bulldogs eased up a
little and Campbell River took advantage of the space to even it up at
the end of the period.
The rest of the game
had spectators on the edge of their seats with good chances going both
ways. At 10:53 Beau Wilson and Austyn Smith combined in a 2 on 1 rush
with Smith scoring the go ahead goal and Wilson assisting. The one
goal difference held up until the last minute when Smith passed to
MacLeod for an empty netter.

The Bantams thank
sponsors Sure Span Construction Ltd. and Dave Koszegi/Remax for
supporting them into the playoffs. The Bantam Bulldogs are away in
Powell River on February 6th for their next play-off game.

Bantam A
Bulldogs Advance to Island Semi Finals

In
weekend action Luciano Somerville (22) and Sam Visona (13) pressure the
Powell River goal as Spencer Pierce (20) ties up a defender on the boards.
The Bantam A Bulldogs, who are
sponsored by Sure Span Construction and Dave Koszegi/Remax
Realty, will advance to the Vancouver Island semi-final after
completing the North Island play off series on Saturday February
6. In spite of losing 2-4 in Powell River, Alberni stayed
close enough to move on. The series ended in a three way tie
that had to be decided on a calculation of goal average. That
puts Campbell River Tyees in first place and Alberni Valley
Bulldogs in second, and means that Alberni will be scheduled to
play Juan de Fuca Grizzlies in a cross-over game in Victoria
next weekend.
The first period went end to
end until Powell River scored with 4:28 left. As the period
ended, Marino Somerville came out of the penalty box, picked up
an outlet pass behind the Powell River defence and broke in
alone to even the score. Powell River went ahead again as the
second period started. Then on power play Nathan Read passed to
Somerville at the side of the net. When jamming it in at the
post did not work, Somerville pulled the puck back and got it
past on the other side.
The 2-2 tie held until late in
the third period. Facing elimination, Powell River poured on
the offence and held the Bulldogs in the defensive zone for most
of the period. Bryce Dirocco had to make a lot of saves, but
with four minutes left one got by. Then, the Powell River
coach, knowing more goals would be needed to avoid elimination,
took the unusual step of pulling the goalie in a winning game.
The result was one more goal, but it was not enough to keep
Alberni out of the next round of play-offs.

- Bantam Bulldogs over Comox
The
Bantam A Bulldogs decisively defeated Comox Chiefs in a home game at
Weyerhaeuser on February 27th. Alberni took advantage of
an early power play opportunity to get on the score board first.
Nathan Read and Beau Wilson set up Chase Gaudreault at 17:06. Seconds
later Austyn Smith took a pass from Corey Beecroft to make a 2-0
lead. Then as the first period wound down Beecroft and Gaudreault fed
Marino Somerville to go up 3-0.
Comox took one back off a turnover
early in the second period, but the Bulldogs reclaimed their 3 goal
margin before the end of the frame when Somerville passed through the
crease for Gaudreault to make his second goal in the open glove side.
Early in the third frame Wilson passed back to Read in the high slot.
Read rang a slap shot in off the left post to make it a 5-1 final.
The Bulldogs played hard throughout
the game, using their size and speed to control play and passing
well. They played short handed for much of the third period,
including two three on five situations, but their penalty kill
effectively sealed the game by shutting down Comox on all seven
attempts.

As this may be their last home game
of the season, the team really wants to thank sponsors Dave Koszegi of
ReMax, Surespan Construction and Tseshaht Market. Thank you also to
Coaches Kevin Somerville, Ron Buse and Rob Gaudreault, Conditioning
Coaches Dave and Jill Sherwood, Safety Person Bruno Visona and all the
parents for your support through the season.

Bantam A Bulldogs Back
With Gold
Alberni Valley’s Bantam A Bulldogs finished their season by bringing home
gold medals from the gold division of the 33rd Port Coquitlam
Bantam International Tournament which was held over Spring Break. The
last time an Alberni team did this was in 1982.

Back standing l-r: Head Coach Kevin
Somerville, Tyler Ibsen, Tyler Wilhelm, Beau Wislon (A), M. Somerville,
Chase Gaudreault, Coach Rob Gaudreault.
Kneeling l-r: Spencer Pierce, Logan
Savard, Austyn Smith.
Sitting l-r: Casey Davidson, PoCo
stick boy, Bryce DiRocco, Ryan Buse, Dawson Marlatt, Liam MacLeod,
Nathan Read (C), Sam Visona.
The
first game was at 7:15 AM on Thursday morning against Surrey Hurricanes.
The Bulldogs took a while to get their legs going, but in the end ran the
score up to 8-1. Beau Wilson had a goal and four assists and Tyler
Wilhelm contributed a goal and 3 assists. Wilson was named as game MVP
for offense and Nathan Read was MVP for defence.
Thursday afternoon against the South Side Athletic Club out of Edmonton,
the bounces all seemed to go to the other team in a game where shots on
goal favoured Alberni 35-19. Edmonton scored first on a power play early
in the first period. Beau Wilson tied it up for Alberni with an assist
from Chase Gaudreault early in the second period. The go ahead goal in
the second period went in and out so fast that the referee missed it. Then
an icing that was brushed off by the linesman caught the Bulldog defence
by surprise, which allowed Edmonton to score and finish with a narrow 2-1
win. MVPs for the Bulldogs were Ryan Buse on defence and Sam Visona on
offence.
On
Friday afternoon the Bulldogs took a while to find their game against host
Port Coquitlam Pirates before opening up with 4 goals in the third period
to finish at 8-2. They outshot Poco by 46-10. Chase Gaudreault led the
scoring with 2 goals and an assist. Logan Savard had 3 assists and was
named as the offensive MVP. Dawson Marlatt collected the defensive MVP of
the game.
After the game the team got together for dinner. After dinner, Read
thanked Coach Kevin Somerville for all his work with the team over the
season. Wilson gave similar thanks to Assistant Coach Rob Gaudreault and
also acknowledged coach/manager Ron Buse who was unable to be at the
tournament. In responding Somerville noted the talent of the plalyers and
also thanked the parents and sponsors, Sure Span Construction and Dave
Koszegi of ReMax Realty.
Friday evening was the skills competition where Read and Wilson
represented Alberni and contributed points to their black team’s tie with
the white team. Wilson clocked the fastest time of all competitors on the
agility drill and was runner up on speed.
The
final round robin game on Saturday saw the Bulldogs up against Comox
Chiefs. Because Comox had tied Edmonton earlier, Alberni needed a win to
stay in contention for the gold semi-final. Coach Somerville said, “The
team really gelled when they needed to.” In this game they did everything
right against a very competitive team. Good team puck control and
positional play created the first goal for Alberni. Buse collected a pass
back to the right point and put it across to Read who one timed a hard
shot from the other side. The Comox keeper couldn’t contain the rebound
and Liam Macleod was right there to put it in top shelf before the goalie
could turn back. In the second period Comox piled into the slot and
evened it up at 6:02. The momentum might have shifted, but barely a
minute later Marino Somerville passed to Savard, setting up 2 on 0 rush
where Savard put the puck cross crease for Wilson to finish on the right
side. Comox tied it again two minutes later and once again Alberni
answered to hold the lead. This time it was Gaudreault deflecting Tyler
Ibsens’s shot from the point to make it 3-2 for Alberni. The Bulldogs
defensive play kept the puck out of their own zone for most of the game
and minimized good scoring chances for Comox when it was there. Both
goalies made key saves throughout the game. Bryce DiRocco was given the
nod as MVP defence and MacLeod as MVP offense.
The
win put Alberni Valley into the
semi-final on Sunday against undefeated Calgary Blazers. The game was
scoreless for ten minutes until the Alberni defence turned over a Blazer
break out attempt inside the blue line. This created an opportunity for
Read to pass to MacLeod in the slot for a high shot into the net. Two
minutes later Buse put out a long stretch pass which Wilson chased down
deep in the offensive zone and converted. The next goal came off hard
work deep in the Calgary zone. It finished with a Savard pass to Wilson
behind the net from where he put his second goal in off the back of the
netminder. Alberni kept up the pressure in the second period and was
rewarded at the mid-point when the cycle from Somerville to Spencer Pierce
behind the net to Wilson jumping into the slot made the next goal happen.
In the dying seconds of the third period Alberni added one more on a power
play. Again good puck control was a factor as the puck went from Visona to
Wilson in the left circle to Tyler Wilhelm in the high slot from where he
wristed in a hard shot. MVPs for the 5-0 semi-final win were Wilson on
offense and Read on defence.
Edmonton defeated Kerry Park Islanders in the other semi-final, giving
Alberni a rematch and a chance to avenge their only round robin loss in
the gold medal game. They wasted no time. Somerville and Wilson combined
on the first shift to put Alberni up 1-0. Before the period ended, some
well controlled passing from MacLeod to Read to Visona set up a backhand
goal at the left post. In the second period with a man advantage it was
from Wilhelm at the blue line to Gaudreault in front and then to Savard to
finish from the open side. Then with under a minute to go Austyn Smith
passed to Wilson in the slot to make it 4-0. In the final frame Savard
passed to Pierce at the blue line from where he split the defence and bent
the twine at 11:29 with a hard shot under the goalie’s left elbow.
MVPs for the gold medal game were Savard on offence and Wilhelm on defence.
In addition tournament MVPs included DiRocco in goal and Read on defence.
Coach Somerville summed it up by saying “The kids played hard this
weekend. Due to the injuries that were plaguing us we had to play a real
defensive style which ironically created some great offensive
opportunities We only had seven goals scored against us in six games ad
the final two were shut outs. I wish we had been playing like this 3
weeks ago in the play offs. Its great to see this group of kids earn some
recognition and finish on a positive note. They really are a talented
bunch.”
