MIDGET CANUCKS WIN SILVER

The Canadian Tire Midget Canucks returned from the Nick Collin’s Memorial Tournament over the holidays with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie to secure the silver medal in midget recreational play.

The Canucks played the Sooke Thunderbirds to a 4-4 tie in a game that allowed the locals to shake off the rust after a two week layoff. Alberni went 3 for 4 on the power play in the game. Brandon Antonichuk had a goal and two assists to lead his team while Blake Frechette, Colin Mowat and Taylor Heck added singles. Dan Gillis made 17 saves to preserve the tie.

Game two saw the Canucks play the strong Cowichan Valley Capitals in a rough affair with the locals skating away with a 7-4 win. Antonichuk fired a hat trick while Joey Veenkamp chipped in with a pair of goal and two assists. Dillon Rees and Braeden Klaver each got a goal to close out the scoring. Nathan Otte got the win in nets for Alberni with 31 saves.

The next opponent was the host Kerry Park team who exploded out of the gates with a quick 2-0 lead. The Canucks got on track and tied the score at 2-2 with goals 1:38 apart late in the first period. Alberni settled down and put the pressure on the Islanders and scored six unanswered goals to win 8-2. Rees and Veenkamp both scored twice while singles were scored by Heck, Antonichuk, Jesse Manchanda and Jory Cole. Dan Gillis shut the door the last 40 minutes making 24 save for the victory.

Juan de Fuca Orcas were next in the playoff round and the locals squeaked by with a 6-5 win a very entertaining game. Antonichuk had another hat trick and Veenkamp, Rees and Klaver netted one each. Otte and Gillis split the duties in net for the win and move their team to the gold medal game.

The championship final saw the Canucks have a return match with Cowichan Valley in a hard fought battle between two strong skating teams. The teams played cautious hockey in the opening period with Cowichan getting the upper hand with a 2-1 lead. The Canucks pressured relentlessly in the second period and finally tied the score at 2-2 after 40 minutes. The Capitals went ahead 3-2 but once again the Canucks tied up the score. With less than 2:30 remaining in the game the locals were caught with too many men on the ice and the Capital scored the winning goal on the ensuing power play. The Canucks battled fiercely but it was the Capitals who scored again to seal the victory with the 5-3 win. Dan Gillis played a strong game in goal making 34 saves.

The coaching staff was very pleased, proud and satisfied with the efforts of all the players and is excited to build on the momentum that the Canucks enjoyed.
