2009 - UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY
The
Smitty’s/Best
Western Barclay Hotel Peewee Bulldogs are undefeated in league play.
With a 6-2 win last Sunday against Powell River the Bulldogs are 4 and 0
in league play. The Bulldogs started the game strong, leading 3 -1 after
the first period and 6 – 2 after the second. Scoring was spread out with
two goals from Matt Oliver, a goal and an assist from Ethan Sundstrum,
Keagun Selva, Josh Harvey, and Logan Henson each had a goal, Matt Irg
had two assists, Cody Beecroft and Griffin Dolling each added an assist.
Saturday the
Bulldogs hosted Juan de Fuca in an exhibition game. Juan de Fuca came
out strong and won the game 6-1. Ethan Sundstrum scored the lone goal
for the Bulldogs.

League Play
The
Smitty’s/Best
Western Barclay Hotel Peewee Bulldogs continue their winning streak. On
November 28 the Bulldogs played a league game against Triport at the
Multiplex winning 4-2. The next day saw the Bulldogs in Saanich, where
they won another league game 4-3.
With six wins and
no losses, the Bulldogs are first place in their Tier 2 division.
Last Saturday, the
Peewee Bulldogs hosted the Tier 1 Nanaimo team for an exhibition game.
Both teams started tentatively with Nanaimo leading 1-0 after one
period. At 14:24 of the second period the Bulldogs tied the game and
with a late second period goal, the Bulldogs took the lead. The third
period was all Bulldogs. They scored two more unanswered goals and won
the game 4 -1.
As it has been all
season, the scoring was spread out, with goals from Tristan McLeod,
Logan Henson, Matt Oliver, and Keagun Selva. Ethan Sundstrum contributed
two assists, Josh Harvey and Keagun Selva added the other assists.
Goalie, Ryan Price had another stellar performance in net.

The Smitty’s/Best
Western Barclay Hotel Peewee Bulldogs head into the Christmas Break on a
winning streak, with a pair of wins over the weekend. Saturday the
Bulldogs travelled to Comox to play an exhibition game against their
Tier 1 team. The final score was 4-2 Bulldogs with goals from Matt
Oliver, Logan Henson, Jakob Leboe and Griffin Dolling. Henson and Leboe
each added an assist.
Sunday the
Bulldogs hosted a league game against Peninsula. The first period ended
scoreless and it wasn’t until 5:18 of the second period that Ethan
Sundstrum opened the scoring. Sundstrum passed to Cody Beecroft who
fired one just under the crossbar to make it 2-0. Matt Oliver, assisted
by Tristan McLeod, scored the third goal and the Bulldogs won 3-1. They
are now at 7 wins, no losses in league play.

- Peewee Give at Christmas
This year
instead of team gifts the AVMHA PeeWee 'A' Bulldogs decided to sponsor
a local family through the Salvation Army. The family was a single
mom with 2 young girls and 1 boy. The team supplied the turkey dinner
and gifts for the family.

PEEWEE TAKE SILVER AT COWICHAN
TOURNAMENT
The
Smitty’s/Best
Western Barclay Hotel Peewee Bulldogs played in the Tier II Cowichan
Valley Tournament over the Christmas break. Game one was against the
host Cowichan Capitals. The score was close after the first period, with
the Bulldogs up 2-1. The rest of the game belonged to the Bulldogs who
went on to win 11-3. Jakob
Leboe 3 goals, Tristan
McLeod 3 goals, Jake Eskola 2 goals, Ethan Sundstrum 1 goal, and
Griffin Dolling 1 goal.
Next up for the
Bulldogs was the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies. The Bulldogs came out strong
and were up 4-0 after the first period. The final score was 11-3 for the
Bulldogs. Leboe had a hat trick, Dolling 1 goal and 3 assists. A goal
each for Sundstrum, Cody Beecroft, Michael Addy, Josh Harvey, and Matt
Oliver. Assists to Leboe, Sundstrum, Harvey, Keagun Selva, Addy, Logan
Henson, and Oliver.
The final game of
the round robin was against league rivals Powel River. The Bulldogs
jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. For the rest of the
game the Bulldogs played a strong defensive game and won 2-0. Goals
scored by
Sundstrum and Harvey with an assist to Addy. Ryan Price had a shut out.
Finishing first in
their pool, the Bulldogs faced the Victoria Eagles in the semi-finals.
After one period the game was tied 0-0. In the second period the
Bulldogs scored three goals and won the game 7-3.
Sundstrum scored 4
goals including a penalty shot, Leboe, Beecroft and McLeod each scored.
Beecroft and Matt Irg each added 2 assists, Mcleod, and
Harvey
I assist.
The final game was
between the Bulldogs and Powell River. As in the previous meeting the
Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The second period
ended tied 2-2. Powell River took the lead 45 seconds into the third
period. With 3:55 to go Powell River scored again. A late goal by the
bulldogs at 1:56 wasn’t enough and Powell River won 4-3.

Vancouver,
BC – The Canucks Centre, BC Hockey and CBC are pleased to announce
that the Barclay-Smitty’s Alberni
Valley Bulldogs Minor Hockey team has
won the opportunity to shadow the Canucks for Hockey Day in Canada
through the first annual Canucks Centre Poster Contest. The Bulldog’s
exciting day will include team travel/accommodation to Vancouver to
watch the Vancouver Canucks take on the Chicago Blackhawks on January
23, 2010. The winning team also has the opportunity to meet members of
the Vancouver Canucks and attend their morning game day skate. The day
will be documented and included as part of CBC Television’s Hockey Day
in Canada broadcast on January 30th when the Vancouver Canucks hit the
road to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In celebration of
CBC Hockey Day in Canada, registered Pee-Wee and Bantam minor hockey
teams from around BC were invited to participate in the contest. Teams
were asked to showcase their team spirit through an original picture
or poster submitted online and a story about their most memorable team
experience. A total of 40 teams from throughout British Columbia
submitted entries. The entries were then judged by a panel represented
by BC Hockey, CBC and Canucks Centre for BC Hockey. The winning team’s
story and poster was chosen the best representation of team and
association pride.
The announcement
of the winning team was made on Hockey Night in Canada’s After Hours
January 9, 2010 by CBC representative Kevin Weekes. Canucks Centre, BC
Hockey and CBC are proud to show their ongoing support growing team
spirit within BC hockey communities.

PEEWEE BULLDOGS 1ST PLACE IN
LEAGUE
Heading into
last weekend’s games, the Smitty’s/Best Western Barclay Hotel Peewee
Bulldogs needed to win one of their next three remaining league games to
clinch first place in the Tier II Island Division. They did it in the
first game. With only 12 players the Bulldogs travelled to Powell River
on Saturday. With no scoring in the first period, Jakob Leboe scored his
first of 4 goals to put the bulldogs up 1-0. Just before the ice clean,
Powell River tied the game. After the break, the Bulldogs came out
flying and won the game 6-2. With four goals from Leboe, Tristan McLeod
added I goal and 2 assists, Keagun Selva a goal and an assist, Ethan
Sundstrum, Michael Addy, Josh Harvey and Matt Oliver each contributed an
assist.
Sunday saw the
Bulldogs in Parksville to play Oceanside. After jumping out to a 4-1
lead the short-benched Bulldogs ran out of gas and had to settle for a
5-5 tie. Two goals came from Cody Beecroft, Oliver a goal and 2 assists,
McLeod a goal and an assist, Selva and Sundstrum each added an assist.

PEEWEE BULLDOGS GUARANTEED BANNER
Sunday’s game
against Saanich was the last league game of the season for the Smitty’s/Best
Western Barclay Hotel Peewee Bulldogs. With the Tier II Island League
banner already guaranteed, the Bulldogs were trying to go undefeated in
league play.
Late in the first
period the Bulldogs opened the scoring with a goal from Jakob Leboe
assisted by Michael Addy. Matt Irg, with an assist from Jake Eskola, made
it 2-0. After the ice clean Saanich scored to make it a one goal game. A
minute later, Ethan Sundstrum, assisted by Josh Harvey, gave the Bulldogs
back a two goal lead. Saanich scored the only goal in the third period.
The Bulldogs killed off 11 penalties, including a 5 minute major in the
third period, to win their last league game and go undefeated in league
play with 9 wins and 1 tie.
Playoffs start at
home against Campbell River on January 31 at 12:15.
