For Immediate Release
October 25, 2022
Saanichton, B.C. – BC Hockey is seeking individuals to help form two workgroups aimed at accelerating positive change in the hockey experience for all participants, volunteers and members.
The workgroups being created are the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Workgroup and the Safe Sport Workgroup. The BC Hockey Board is forming these important bodies and is looking for a cross-section of people that have both hockey and non-hockey backgrounds.
“This is an incredibly important time for the game of hockey at both the national and regional levels,” Stephanie White, Chair of the BC Hockey Board of Directors said. “We are proud of the work already being done, but it is imperative that we now do even more to redefine the culture of hockey and to make it a safer and more inclusive environment.
“These workgroups, combined with our already established Indigenous Workgroup, will be important contributors toward this goal. We are seeking individuals from different cultures, lifestyles, and experiences to help populate these groups. Our membership is filled with many incredible people who could be invaluable members of these groups. We also place importance on the voices from outside the hockey community. Together we will help hockey in B.C. and Yukon become even better.”
Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Workgroup
A BC Hockey Board Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Workgroup will be assembled to review and build recommendations with respect to addressing racism in hockey and making the sport more diverse and inclusive.
Safe Sport Workgroup
BC Hockey Safe Sport environments are accessible, inclusive, respectful, and free from maltreatment. This Board workgroup plays a role in creating a healthy culture that fosters safe sport practice that provides all participants in the BC Hockey Community with strong resources in education and reporting.
