FAQ
Registration & Waitlist – Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there a waitlist for registration?
Our number one goal at Alberni Valley Minor Hockey is to welcome as many players as possible each season. We believe every child who wants to play hockey should have the opportunity to do so, and we work hard to make that happen.
That said, there are important factors that impact how many players we can accommodate at each age level.
Why do you set registration capacities?
Registration capacities are put in place to help us manage numbers responsibly at the start of registration. These are not firm limits on participation, but rather a way to ensure we don’t overcommit before confirming key resources.
What factors affect how many players can be accepted?
There are two main considerations:
Coaching availability – Each team or group requires enough qualified coaches to provide a safe and positive experience for players.
Ice availability – Ice time is limited, and we work closely with the City to secure as much as possible for our association.
What happens when a division reaches capacity?
Once a division fills, additional players are placed on a waitlist. This allows us time to assess whether we can:
Add more teams or groups
Secure additional ice times
Confirm additional coaches
Do players on the waitlist still have a chance to play?
Yes. Being on the waitlist does not mean a player will not get a spot. We actively review registration numbers and resources and do everything we can to accommodate more players wherever possible.
Why not just allow everyone to register right away?
We want to avoid situations where families register and pay, only to later be refunded if we cannot accommodate the numbers. Using a waitlist helps us be fair, transparent, and responsible while we confirm what we can realistically support.
What is the ideal group size?
We aim to keep group sizes at a level where players can develop, stay engaged, and be properly supported by coaches. In some cases, we may increase numbers slightly if resources allow, but this is always carefully considered.
Why do you promote programs like First Shift and other intro to hockey programs, recruitment if there are waitlists?
Growing the game is a core part of our mission. Programs like First Shift, intro to hockey, and female-focused initiatives are designed to introduce new players to hockey and create more opportunities for kids to get involved.
Registration numbers can vary significantly from year to year and across different age groups, and it’s not possible to predict exactly how many players will register in each division ahead of time. Because of this, we plan for growth and actively encourage new participants.
At the same time, we are committed to providing a safe, positive, and well-supported experience for every player. When registration exceeds what we can immediately accommodate based on available ice and coaching resources, waitlists allow us the time to assess options and expand where possible.
In short, we will always continue to grow and promote the game, while working just as hard behind the scenes to build the capacity needed to support that growth.
